It is a staggering fact, but roughly 21 million Americans can not read at all. An even scarier truth is that nearly half of the US adult population falls into the category of functionally illiterate. But it doesn't stop there. Many kindergarten students are  not prepared for the first grade. Older children are dropping out of school at an alarming rate.

If we hope to win the fight against illiteracy we have to start with ourselves. Pick up a book and read. Read it to your kids. Ask them to read it to you.

Reading a bedtime story to your child isn't just about reading. It's much more than that. Reading helps promote a love of books and provides the essential bonding experience all children crave. Let's face it… there's nothing more soothing for parent and child than snuggling up together with a good book!

Remember - It is never too early (or too late) to start reading to your child.
